Anastara

The City of Anastara, occupying the entire length and breadth of the floating island Ascelion, exists only because of Diatu Magicademy. More specifically, it exists because as Diatu become more populous and expanded over the years, it shouldered aside the former town that it began in and claimed it. At the same time, the Magicademy brought more attention to Ascelion; thus more trade, thus more people, and so on until the island went from backwater to one of the few Independent Cities in the Tenscore Kingdoms. Its mayor has more political and economic might at her disposal than a number of true kingdoms, and its strict political neutrality makes it a constant safe port and market no matter who is warring on whom down below.

Anastara is divided into rings, which are themselves divided into districts. Having arisen more by chance and history than law or decree, the districts are not perfect exemplars of their names; one can, for example, find restaurants in the Manor District, and stores with perfectly mundane goods do brisk business in the Magic District.

Each ring is divided by a canal, and intercut with several more, into which all the River of Metal flows -- leading each canal to have a clever name such as “Iron” or “Brass” or “Copper”. Water is the primary means of transport for goods or those people too good to walk, as the streets of Anastara are mostly narrow affairs and not particularly straight. The city is easy to get lost in and specific places can be hard to find. An entire industry not only exists to aid with city navigation, but has some of the most vicious economic clashes in the history of Ascelion, as the personal guides who ostentatiously name themselves the Pathfinders and the estate of renowned cartographer and eccentric nutbag Cameron Calay squabble over whether the latter’s “Guide to the Mysteries of Anastara (5th Ed.)” can replace the personal touch of the former.
